1. Land Preparation

·         Soil should be well drained, loamy to clay soil and avoid waterlogging.

·         Ensure field is weed-free and has good drainage.

·         Form flat or raised beds as suitable for your region.

2. Time of Sowing

·         Best Sowing Window: Rabi season from late October to early December.

·         For higher yields, opt for sowing around 31st October in sub-humid or mid-hill temperate zones.

3. Seed Rate and Sowing Method

·         Seed Rate: 1 Qtls./Ha.

·         Spacing: 60cm between rows and 10cm between plants.

·         Sow seeds at a depth of 4–5cm.

4. Seed Treatment

·         Treat seeds with recommended fungicide and Rhizobium inoculant before sowing to prevent seed-borne diseases and enhance nodulation.[4]

·         Optionally, soak seeds overnight in water or gibberellic acid (10ppm) solution for improved germination.

5. Fertilizer Management

·         FYM (Farmyard Manure): Apply 20t/ha at final land preparation.

·         Chemical fertilizers (as basal):

·         Nitrogen (N): 20–60kg/ha (higher N can be counterproductive due to reduced nodulation).

·         Phosphorus (P₂O₅): 60–80kg/ha.

·         Potassium (K₂O): 30–40kg/ha.

·         All fertilizers are best applied at sowing time.

·         In acid soils, dust treated seeds with 1.5kg powdered lime per hectare.

6. Irrigation

·         Critical stages: Flowering, pod set, and grain filling.

·         Provide light irrigation at 10–15 day intervals.

·         Avoid water logging, especially in the early stages, as peas are sensitive to excess moisture.

7. Weed Management

·         Maintain weed-free conditions for up to 40–50 days after sowing.

·         Chemical: Pre-emergence application of Pendimethalin (Stomp 30EC) at 0.75–1.5kg a.i./ha.

·         Two manual weedings at 40 and 60 days after sowing.

8. Plant Protection

·         Treat for common diseases like wilt and powdery mildew as needed.

·         Monitor for pests such as pod borers and aphids; apply recommended plant protection chemicals as required.

9. Harvesting

·         First picking at 70-75 days after sowing; subsequent pickings every 5–7 days.

·         3-4 Pickings can be done.

·         Harvest tender pods for best market quality
